External fixator to upper arm

The upper limb is so vital for our activities of daily living. Deformity can occur for a number of reasons and this can lead to loss of function. The most important function in the upper limb is motion of the joints and particularly the hand.

The arm is injured more frequently than the leg in children and most injuries heal well if treated properly. Many fractures will remodel even if not in a completely anatomical position but the effect on the joints can be very dramatic in some cases. Infections can cause problems with growth and there are many congenital and developmental conditions that need treatment to ensure maximum function of the arm.

Dr Uglow is experienced in treating trauma and infection in the upper limb as well as correcting deformities. Length is less of a concern than with the lower limb but conditions such as achondroplasia and growth arrest following infection and trauma can lead to shortening and these can be treated effectively to ensure good function and development of the arms.

The hand is a very complex structure and is treated by expert hand surgeons. Dr Uglow will only manage minor hand conditions and refer to appropriate experts as required.
